Looking at the Future of Al-Qaeda

i2 and the Institute for the Study of Violent Groups (ISVG) at the University of New Haven developed an infographic that examines how the leadership of al-Qaeda has changed in the decade since September 11th.

The chart, "Looking at the Future of al-Qaeda," was compiled using information from ISVG’s database, the world's largest collection of open-source data on members and activities of violent and extremist groups around the world. That information was then accessed and analyzed using i2's Analyst's Notebook, which allows users to not only create a picture of who the key terrorist leaders are, but also how they are connected to each other, what their roles within the organization are, whether they have been captured or killed, or where they were last known to be operating.

By visualizing and exploring non-obvious connections in data like this, analysts at intelligence, defense and law enforcement agencies are able to produce actionable information that helps interrupt terrorist threats and maintain peace and safety around the world.
