Conway, South Carolina- Law Enforcement agencies on the Grand Strand have been using a high tech tool to catch criminals and are now hoping to expand its use to neighboring jurisdictions. Currently the following agencies are linked to the system: Horry County Police, Horry County Sheriff’s Office, Myrtle Beach Police, North Myrtle Beach Public Safety, Conway Police, Aynor Police, Surfside Public Safety, Atlantic Beach Police, Georgetown Sheriff’s Office and the 15th Circuit Drug Enforcement Unit.
COPLINK, a software product designed by former law enforcement organizes and rapidly analyzes vast quantities of seemingly unrelated data currently housed in incompatible databases and record management systems. Using this technology, officers of the Horry County Police Department were able to capture two bank robbery suspects last year by leveraging years of records to piece together information on the suspects.
On Monday, August 2, 2010, representatives of i2 Inc., the company responsible for the COPLINK product, will join Horry County Assistant Administrator Director Paul Whitten for a media demonstration from the Horry County Police Department. The demonstration will include a live demo of the COPLINK product and an explanation of how this crime-fighting technology is deployed throughout South Carolina and the U.S. overall.
To make the system even more effective, Horry County will begin reaching out to neighboring jurisdictions to share access to COPLINK for the benefit of all – the more law enforcement officers linked to the software and the more data gathered, the more valuable it is.
Again, the media is invited to attend a demonstration on Monday, August 2, with Paul Whitten, i2 representatives, and officers who have had success using the technology.
